The History of the Mindful Doughnut
Coming into
Balance and Harmony
With Food
Fred Burggraf, author of "The CAMP System," was invited to a small party in honor of a friend who was retiring. The friend knew of Fred's interest in mindful eating and was, in fact, quite a mindful person himself. He was also a big fan of doughnuts.

When the party began, others in the group brought out several boxes, each containing a dozen doughnuts. Since there were only about eight people at this small party, there were enough doughnuts for each person to have at least three or four.

The friend was overwhelmed by the abundance of doughnuts, but he also wanted to stay mindful. So he asked Fred to lead the group in eating the doughnuts mindfully. Fred was happy to do so, and more or less gave the group the same eating instructions that you saw on the Mindful Doughnut web page.

The mindful eating session went on for about ten minutes. The group took its time working through the 16 bites of doughnut. After the last bite, there was a lively discussion of how different it was to eat a doughnut that way: so mindfully, carefully, thoughtfully.

Most interesting, though, was the fact that not one person at the party wanted another doughnut. All those uneaten doughnuts sat there, just waiting for someone to take a second helping. But no one did.

All agreed that eating a doughnut mindfully made one doughnut more than enough. This was the power of mindful eating, and all were convinced that mindfulness made a huge difference in the way they saw the food that day.
